Hi Tim,

I'm sure someone is more knowledgeable than I - but if I am not mistaken, most engine control cables are universal. You may need to specify a specific terminal fitting. The terminals are likely specific to your engine/pedestal setup and less about boat model/year.

You could start here:

Perhaps someone in a parts department may be able to give you better advice specific to your setup.

Hope this helps.

#2 Re: General discussion » boomkicker for MkV » 2023-02-09 15:05:12

Pablo,

I installed a K1000 boomkicker a couple years ago. Love it. All Mk V's that i've seen opted for the K1000 over the K0800.

On a related note - You can mount the kicker to the mast a few different ways. They ship with a mast fitting that slides into the internal track of the mast. The standard slug that shipped with the kicker was a cylindrical/barrel type fitting (at least from Defender). This did not work at all. The luff track on my mast was too wide.

I suspect you'll need to specify/order a different mast slide. As best I can recall, I used the 3/4" plate (Part No: M1038) but the 7/8" may be better (M1033). You can measure your mainsail slides to confirm. Alternatively, i'm sure you could make one with some SS bar and a tap. https://www.seoladair.com/parts_K1000.html

I needed to un-step the mast to install the mast slide. On some boats, you can fish the slide from above the gooseneck but I could not get the slide past the gooseneck on my boat. I needed to insert the slide from the base of the mast.

cheers,
matt

I replaced a laminate UK tape drive with a north NPL 155% and converted to RF this winter. I priced out a few different lofts and was surprised at how competitive the price for north was. I haven't yet sailed it, but i'm over in at RYC just west of you. You're welcome to come out and sail the boat before purchasing this spring.

The guidance I received from all the sailmakers I spoke to was consistent. They estimated the life of a laminate headsail was about 3- to 5-years for reasonable PHRF performance as long as you don't abuse the sail.

I converted the baby stay over to dyneema and a 4 part block and tackle. The dyneema is a little easier on the mast (stowed) and leech (in use). As others have pointed, i only use it in chop upwind.

For the spin downhaul, I have a deck padeye mounted halfway between the forward hatch and the bow. My babystay attachment is on the forward bulkhead and passes through the house just behind the forward hatch. Do you have issues launching the sail out of the hatch using the babystay for the downhaul? I would think the down haul would be rubbing/catching on the open hatch?

For what it's worth, we put the deck sweeper UK tape drive through the stanchion last year. The local North sales rep sent me PSA patches and stanchion patches free of charge even before I order a sail from him. They also measured the boat for the new sail. I was genuinely impressed by the service.

If you can hold off till the fall, you can get around ~10% discount around the boat show specials.

Happy shopping!

cheers,
matt

Replacing the Kracor freshwater tank on my MKV. While our tank is a discontinued, non-standard tank, Kracor can still produce it via custom order. However, they need the mold and/or part number.

Does anyone have this information? There is a sticker on the top of the tank that states both model and part numbers. The sticker on my tank was illegible. Many thanks in advance.

#6 Re: General discussion » Mk V bulkhead drain » 2014-10-20 08:10:46

If I'm not mistaken the 5## series denotes the hulls built in Rhode island while the other numbers denote the niagara location.

Generally this corresponds to the "CCY" vs "ZCC" difference.

Believe there is a full thread on the hull number issue but suppose the take away from this is both the early production Canadian and US boats share the same defect.

Recently undertook a Mk v restoration project and have been heavily utilizing the site. So a brief thank you to all those whom have contributed.

Noted in the black arts section there was some commentary about a recess in the earlier Mk v's that's allowed for water to collect just forward of the main bulkhead. Apparently this defect was addressed in later models by the addition of a drainage hole. Has anyone completed this repair retroactively?

Any recommendations on size and location? May be a case of a picture being worth a thousand words.

Cheers,
Matt
