#1 General discussion » installing new hatch on MkIII » 2018-05-12 01:12:47

Hi, I will pick-up  my new Lewmar hatch this afternoon and it will replace my Atkins & Hoyle . The Inside/cutout size is 1/2 inc larger than the old one, not sure if I will need/want to increase the hole yet ( will dismantle  it first ). ANyone had special issues with such a replacement?  what about a mosquito screen that can be shaped to fit around the head front bulkhead? ( I used to have a screen attached with velcro ).
I bought the medium profile thicker plexiglass and frame than the low profile ), hoping that it will interfere less that the A&H with teh jib sheets :-)

Hi,
It would help if mention you have tiller or pedestal, Atomic 4 or diesel.
My pedestal is an Edson 335 and they do have replacement parts at Edson ( shift lever, the long one for an A4 ).

You can always get a new aftermaket from moyermarine ( 412.00 ).. Often it can be fixed by a good welder ( mine had teh drain plus threads stripped, they simply weld/close it. That was 6-7 years ago and still ok.

Hi,
You will feel it easily ( after maybe 4-5 strokes , it kinds of stop moving. I do it only when I empty the bowl to remove sediments and look for water ( no more water after I've installed a Racor as the first inline filter.
If you remove the bowl make sure the cork/rubber bowl gasket is tight otherwise an air leak can prevent it from starting..

Hi Tom,
I did not want to drill so I glued the teak with polyurethane glue ( the one you buy at Home Depot and others ).
It is basically a triangle that makes the corners more "body friendly"  :-)
I took pictures last saturday but not sure how I can upload them ( about 5MB each, unless I want to trim to the bare minimum image ).
Maybe the admin can chime in and tell us if it is possible? ( ftp or something like that ).

Hi,
On mine I simply bought 2 teak steps ( the largest ) which I cut to fit the teak contour in a kind of triangular shape, one on each corner. I think it blends nicely with the teak molding and I have a small Sunbrella cushion that I simply put on when sitting.

Hi,
If you plan to do the "full" paint job ( I mean removing everything like I did ) I recommend using a 2-parts polyurethane paint, like Interlux Perfection, , it will last longer. Kiwi Grip is also the way I would go, looks much like the original C&C anti-skid. I did the mistake of re-doing my whole deck with gelcoat and it took me 2 years  :-)
For the handrails, I also did mistakes, first using jatoba ( it broke when it fell on a concrete ground, then Ipe ... It looks like teak but if you have the screws just a little too tight it splits.
I had a wood-worker/carpenter do mine and they look like the originals ( I have the long ones, which were an option I think ). If I was to do it again I would go with teak.
If possible have the base a little concave, it sits better and also holds the sealant/butyl better.
Hope this helps..

Thanks,
I will only be able to measure this week-end, but it is fairly slim, about 2 3/4 width and height of 3 1/4 , still original, with C&C black logo on it..

Hi,
I have a question that might be of general interest.. Does a MkI boom fit a MkIII mast? ( gooseneck specifically ), I understand a new bail would need to be installed. For the long term plan I have I find my current boom a bit weak, especially since I went with a loose footed main ( no outhaul on mine, just a small, 4 in. ss plate that binds.

#10 Re: General discussion » Boomkicker rigid vang » 2014-05-25 23:13:21

Hi,
Just FYI .. Garhauer has a 20% discount on their rigid vangs ( http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=40 , model RV18-1 or RV-6 ), I am still thinking about the benefits of a kicker vs rigid. One advantage for a rigid is that you don't have to have a 4:1 boom vang besides.

Hi,
On my 1975 MkIII it is 7/16 with a 7/16 turnbuckle. Backstay and shrouds are all 3/8.
Make sure you buy quality ( Wichard are the best ).
A good thing is when you install a furler the Harken MkIV unit 0 can use either a 3/8 or 7/16.

Hi,
It seem obvious but if you have wheel steering did you undo the 4 bolts of the quadrant?

Hi,
No problem with the winches.. I also have the welded aft handrail and my mainsheet barely touch it ( when mainsail is not raised I tie the boom to that handrail so it does not move at all ).
I also bought the side handrails, very useful although I think they should have drilled the holes in a way so it make a rigid link between the two stainless tubes ( I saw it on other boats and it makes it stronger ).

#14 Re: General discussion » Holding Tank Replacement » 2013-06-28 22:45:32

Hi,
You can also make your own, not that complicated to do with plywood and epoxy. If you had a proto tank you can re-use the original fitings ( I chose not to setup the recycle fittings ). I made mine more than 12 years ago and still no leaks/smell.
