Cleaning up the surface

The mating surface must be cleaned down to smooth gelcoat for good bonding. Here, a fine-detail pad sander is clearing out old bonding material. A Dremel-type tool and abrasive drum worked well for the inset edge.

Note the plastic taped inside the opening to minimize the mess inside.
