#1 Re: General discussion » Shaft Size on 1986 Mk V » 2011-06-22 00:15:39

THE RESULT: a new Martec folder was fitted yesterday (cheapest I could get!)and all my problems are solved.  No more shaking/clattering/shaft rumble.  It is labelled as a 12 x 12 and drives boat really well.

My mechanic showed me where the limit-stops on the Gori get flattened over time and allow the blades to go over-centre.  Unless the wear is exactly symmetrical each blade takes a slightly different angle and that causes the vibration etc.

#2 Re: General discussion » Shaft Size on 1986 Mk V » 2011-05-28 05:05:16

Thanks one and all.  I'll certainly be checking ebay for a replacement prop(another brand of folder, as I race).  I believe the rattling/shaking is the Gori not fully opening, because if I go from reverse to forward with the boat still moving aft, the problem does not occur - presumably because this situation pushes the blades to open fully.  As well, depending on sea state and monoeuvering, the shaking sometimes smooths out after a few minutes and I can go to high revs with no problem.  Finally, I had the same problem with a Gori on my last boat and never could cure it!

Hi all, I have searched the site but didn't find the information I seek. Can anyone tell me the shaft size and taper/no-taper for the shaft on the Mk V with the Yanmar 1GM engine?

If anyone knows the required diameter and pitch that would be handy too!  I'm fed up with my rattling/vibrating Gori: it has to go!

Having sold my trailer I now need a cradle for my MK V!
Approx 58" x 130" and able to handle the 4'6" draft.  Beore I spend the big bucks for a new one, is there anyone in the greater Toronto area with a cradle to sell, or knows of one?  Thanks!  Dave Moores dmoores@cogeco.ca

#5 Re: General discussion » MK V port backrest cushion » 2010-03-23 07:32:07

Brian, did you buy Stewball?  I looked at that boat in Muskegon late last year and it's a nice one!  I recall not seeing the backrest on it. Ended up getting my C&C MkV here in Canada.

I have the backrest here at home right now and would be happy to send detail pics and precise measurements if that would help  (I may leave it home anyway as it's quite heavy and I'm going to race).

I have for sale the 4-wheel trailer that came with my C&C 27 MkV.  Six pads, barely 3 years old and little use.  Would fit most sailboats 25-28 feet.  Checked with the manufacturer and price new today $5000.  Asking $3950. Please contact me off the forum at dmoores@cogeco.ca, or call  905 825 1408. Located Oakville Canada.

I recently removed mine, refinished and put them back.  But maybe that's not what you're asking???

Google Flying Tiger Sailboat.  Not a family machine perhaps but relevant to this discussion.  It can be done!

#9 Re: General discussion » Economics of Sailing » 2010-01-17 06:20:35

So to sum it up, it looks like new boats in the "family cruiser/racer" 30 foot range have gotten about twice as expensive in real terms.  Ouch!

However there is a silver lining: back then there was nowhere near the huge population of good used boats out there for the family guy to buy.  When you see 1980s-vintage C&C 29s in great shape going for well under $40K that makes things a bit happier.

But I still wonder how many of those Js will sell, and who to.  Seems to me there is an opportunity for somebody innovative to figure out how to build and sell for less and make a killing.  It would be nice to think so.  If Tata can make a usable 4-seater car and sell for well under $5K even with North American add-ons, maybe it can be done.

Hi Alan,

it appears that my boat never had the shelf starboard side above the ice-box, but it does have the fiddle in place - wierd. Can I get onboard your boat sometime and make a cardboard template of the shelf so I can make/fit one?

Thanks

I was reading the boat of the Year Issue of Sailing World. Two "family size cruiser racers"  the J/97 and J/95 get top billing and I thought they looked nice until I read the price.  These babies are close to $200K on the water!  That's around eight times the cost of a modest family car, and surely out of reach of the "average middle class family" with the a mortgage and 2.1 kids.  Who is going to buy these boats? was sailing always this pricey?  Back in the 80's it seems to me that sailboats were a lot less expensive in real terms.  Or am I suffering a failure of memory?

#12 Re: General discussion » Keelbolt Torquing » 2009-12-15 00:05:54

With regards to raising the pads to take weight off the keel: the conventional wisdom is DON'T.  The boat is designed to rest primarily on its keel, and taking the weight on the pads will damage the hull, or at least distort it.  On my last boat I would back the pads off until I could tell the pad was just starting to move, then tighten it up one turn.

#13 Re: General discussion » Keelbolt Torquing » 2009-12-14 07:19:43

Thanks - in other words "leave well alone"

I took up the floorboards on my MK V for refinishing over the winter and this affords the opportunity to check the keelbolt torque.

There is no sign of any movement, and the keel/hull join is barely discernible from the outside as a very thin line. Is it worth bothering, or best leave well alone?  If YES, does anyone know the torgue settings?  The bolts are of different sizes so I guess they would have different settings?  All advice welcome.

Thanks Windy.  What tool did you buy?  You mentioned some important tricks - would you care to share your "top 3" ?

#19 Re: General discussion » Topsides Restoration » 2009-12-07 07:11:31

Sure enough Alan.  Are you a new owner like myself?  I saw Smoke for sale earlier in the Fall, assume you bought?  See you down there!

The topsides on my MK V are nice and shiny but the colour is a bit patchy - looks like the result of an earlier buffing not done consistently???  Regular cleaner/wax does not clear it, but I am nervous about those products that are for "heavily oxidized" gelcoat.  Can anyone share eexperience/product recoomendations/techniques?

#21 Re: General discussion » Trailer Available » 2009-12-04 23:39:51

Thanks Jim!

All tuning/go-fast advice  appreciated.  I'm a long-time racer (J/24s and other) so I know the basics but anything specific to the MK V would be great.  The boat has very nice sails so here we come!

#22 Re: General discussion » Trailer Available » 2009-12-04 05:23:04

Sure Steve, we'll be racing - mostly round the cans at Oakville.  May not make it to Y'town (been there, done that!), but C&C owners is a possibility.

Hi Steve, thanks for your inquiry.  By all means keep my phone number!

I have just purchased a 27 MK V with a trailer I will not need once the boat is launched in April.

The trailer comes from The Cradle Shop in Toronto and is 3 years old, in pristine condition.  A new one is $4250.  It can be inspected at Oakville, or I can send pictures. Call Dave at 905 825 1408, or a brief response on this forum.
