#1 Re: General discussion » Mark V Cutlass Bearing Replacement » 2016-11-22 06:23:43

Bellows and O-Rings are the main parts replaced - frequency is 6 years according to the manufacturers site

PSS Maintenance Kits

As with any rubber hose below waterline, the PSS bellows must be inspected on a regular basis for any sign of wear, aging or chemical deterioration. PYI suggests preventative maintenance. The PSS bellow should be replaced in six year intervals. During bellows replacement it is recommended the o-rings & set screws in the stainless steel rotor also be replaced.

Bellows may need to be more frequently inspected in an environment where non-sealed batteries emit sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid vapor will accelerate rubber deterioration, as will an ozonater.

Thanks David - I was almost resigned to having the yard do the work but sounds like it isn't an impossible feat.  I do have a Shaft Seal but can take advantage of installing the maintenance kit at the same time.

Cheers,

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone has replaced the cutlass bearing on a mkV and could give me a simple breakdown of the steps along with what materials are required.  I'm hoping to do this work this fall after haulout and like to order the mat'l now.
I have searched the forums but didn't find anything specific to the mkV and assume that she'll have a different config than the classics.

Appreciate any help/info.

Hi there,
Wondering if anyone has found a source for a replacement Transmission Shifter Rod.  It is the larger & longer of the two control 'rods' that shifts the transmission on my yanmar 1GM10.  None of the web stores seem to show our controls.  Original went missing and crew reported they heard something make a splash.

Let me know if you know where I can get a replacement.

Regards,
Scott

Wow - we have four mkV's registered already and hope to have a fifth and possibly our own start before the deadline.  Still Knot Working, Distant Thunder and Consort are looking forward to more mkV's and 27 classics joining us for a great regatta and fantastic party.  If you're on the fence - jump down and join in the fun.

Looks like we're racing PHRF this year but regardless - join in!

Would be great to see some of the mkV's from east of Toronto - Fuzzy Logic/Rum's Gone......are you out there?   Let us know!!!

Lawerence - I'm looking forward to seeing how fast Stargazer II is.  Hoping we can see her out next season.  First race we were thinking of planning for mkVs in 2014 is RCYC Open.  Steve and I are talking about setting up another mkV class 'meeting' this fall and hope you can join in.

Shout out to Fuzzy Logic and Rum's Gone - called your clubs asking to have my contact info passed on.  We are planning on making EYC Levels the mkV class championships and would like to see you attend.  Please let us know you've got the message.  That covers the boats east of Toronto - how about the boats West (Oakville, Bronte, Burlinton, Fifty Point)?

#10 Re: General discussion » Calling All mkVs - Event Notice » 2012-11-20 01:02:23

Tminus 3 days and we are still waiting to hear from some of the mkVs in the area.

To date I have not heard from any boats from Oakville or Whitby, both with active mkVs.  Also, there is also no boat rep from National Yacht Club – Stargazer?.  That said, I am pleasantly surprised that over 50% of the boats that have RSVPed are new owners.

Those mkVs that have yet to RSVP – please either let me know that you will attend or regrettably cannot.

New Friends/Cold Beer/Snacks/Great PRIZES AND a chance to talk about our boats!

Don’t disappoint your boat or yourself by missing this great event!

#12 Re: General discussion » MkV main tack fast pin » 2012-09-14 01:21:01

Hi Lawrence,
I was just changing my Main this weekend and was looking at the tack pin arrangement on Knotius Maximus.  Similar to Steve, my Main uses slugs so we don't take it off every day and hence a fast pin wouldn't be of any advantage.  My tack pin is located just below the reefing hooks which is bolted on to the boom - mine is a 5/8 diameter (approx) clevis pin with a split ring on one side an a cotter pin on the other.  I can see that if your main has a Bolt-Rope style luff then it might make sense to take the main off the boom and a fast pin would help.  Long story short - I don't know if there is a mkV 'standard' for the tack pin - I do know that my mast is different that Steve and Jim's.

Hope this helps.

#13 Re: General discussion » Mainsail traveller for Mark V » 2012-08-27 12:44:07

Philippe,
Sorry it took a while to get back to you but it isn't a 'quick' project.

Small boat car is right but with the 'Hi-Load' optional Torlon bearings.  As I mentioned before, unless you can procure a retrofit to your old traveller car you will be buying the new "CB" cars with Captive Bearings.  This is great because you don't need that little blue piece of plastic but what it does mean is you have to replace the track.  The CB cars have a stainless bearing retainer that requires a new CB-type track.  Additionally, as mentioned before Harken has shifted from their original hole spacing of 4" centres to 100mm.  mkVs were installed with the 4" centres so unless you want to fill and then drill new holes (might not be a bad idea) you need to order the RETRO track with a slight premium and a huge delivery time.  Removing the original track requires you to pull all those round 1" diameter plugs down and also pull the electrical panel for the centre 3 screws.  After its removed trim the new track to fit the existing.  I had found that the outer screwholes weren't drilled.  The ends will have to be drilled and taped for the end cap (Hi-Load Red Ones).  Installing the track is nothing fantastically complex but very fiddly.  The 10-32 nuts and washers are hard to replace by sticking your finger up the 1" hole in the liner.  As I installed the track I was caulking the bottom of the track around the screws with 5200.  The residual guck on my fingers ended up helping hold the nuts and washer on my finger as the screw engaged the first threads.

Once the track is on you simply slip that expensive little car onto the track, rig the control lines as per the diagram and you're set.  I did find that the traveller control lines were too short compared to my previous setup which I thought was 3:1.

Not sure if I've missed anything, hope this helps.

Lawrence,
Don't you have a few mkVs already racing out of NYC?  Have you considered forming a 'team' to come out to the EYC Levels.  I did also note a post on Nationals classifieds looking for a mkV.  Wonder if they would like to come out.

Huzzah Lawrence!
Hull # 132 wasn't on the list of mkVs I had compiled.  Where are you out of and what's her name?

As for waiting to race, this is my first season with the mkVs as well.  My experience has been that this class is very supportive of new "recruits".  It's also important to consider that EYC is one of the only regattas during the year we can race level with other mkVs.  The more the merrier!

#16 Re: General discussion » Mainsail traveller for Mark V » 2012-07-13 05:58:42

Philippe,
Definitely windwards sheeting is the way to go. Still Knot Working and Distant Thunder both have them.  I am hoping to finally install one on my boat next week.  It is very important to note that the Harken windward sheeting cars available now are the CB (captive bearing) type.  These will not fit on the old tracks.  Additionally, the new tracks designed for the CB cars have a different hole spacing 4" to 100mm.  Options are either to find a windward sheeting retrofit for your existing traveller (Steve Reid managed to get one).  Or you need to 'Special' order the RETRO track with the CB groove and 4" hole spacing - 4-6wks delivery.  Enjoy!

Thanks Steve,
I did notice the restriction on the backstay whip - makes sense then.

I'm taking her to the RCYC and I definitely plan on making it out racing mid-week and a few weekend regatta's.  Assuming that EYC Open will be the big opportuntiy to race against other mkV's.

My first post here - just bought Minx and hoping to get her in the water soon.  I wasn't left with much in the way of sails and now looking at quotes from several lofts.  One thing I've just noticed is that the HBL for the mk V's in the Class Rules is 0.42 where PHRF would allow for 0.5ft.  I know it's just an inch but why the discrepancy when it's apparent that the mk I-IV's are making use of the PHRF specification (0.5ft)?
