#3 General discussion » Why won't my sink work? » 2011-06-01 10:03:14

So I filled up my water tank for the first time and the sink would pump like it should and produced (dirty) water.

My first problem is that the drain is only barely draining even though the throughhull valve is open (in line with tube).

Second is that after a 20 minute break the hand pump faucet had no pressure behind it and wouldnt pump. After another 5 minutes it worked fine. After another hour it doesn't produce water again.

Celebros is a 1974, the builders plate says 250218  74. The rudder hangs off the back of the boat and is attached by gudgons. There is one window on each side. There is no internal engine, instead an outboard hangs off the back, in fact it never ever had an internal engine as I would see controls left over in the cockpit. The mainsheet is attached to a traveller on the stern. The boat has no stove, only one small sink on the port side and an ice chest on starboard.

I need new sails so I figured I would need to find out my mark first. (does anyone have any main sails without large tears in them? I have a nice square foot speedhole in my main)-Jamie

#5 General discussion » Mast electrical connection » 2011-06-01 09:35:12

Celebros apparently had a "bent" mast and had it replaced with another in the yard. I am trying to get the running lights working but it has been an interesting challenge. The deck has an electrical connection for four wires but the mast only has 2 wires (ignoring the VHF which has both a wire from the mast and separate hookup). Does anyone know which of the four wires will run the light on the mast for my running lights.

Also can someone explain the difference between a masthead light, and steaming light? And what should be used if I am at anchor.

I know that an electrical diagram would be included in my membership which I will be signing up for in the next week but I want to start night sailing this week <img src="emoticons/icon_smile.gif">-Jamie

#6 General discussion » making a spin pole » 2011-05-19 16:59:24

I have a spinnaker but no pole so I was considering assembling my own spin pole from aluminum tubing (from Dwyer Aluminum mast co.). Does anyone know about how long the pole should be/diameter/ wall thickness? If anyone has had a project like this before please help me through it. On a college budget there is no room for a new $700 spin pole so I figured I would get creative. I have heard generally that about 6" longer than the distance from where the pole is mounted on the mast to the forestay should be about the right length but this is a very bad way to measure.

#7 General discussion » Dingy walls in cabin » 2011-05-19 06:50:02

My wooden cabin walls are looking pretty worn so I would like to restore them but I don't know how to do it. After asking around one guy told me to sand then varnish them but another told me to sand and re-oil them. I believe the walls are mahogany so it surprised me that he said to re-oil them, I thought you could only do that for teak. The walls are currently un-varnished and never have been varnished so this seemed strange too.
